Depth Topics

Lighting Design:

The Boston Arts Academy understands the importance of art and encourages its students to be innovative thinkers. The school feeds the creative minds of its students by providing an abundance of outlets and resources. The building houses studios for several different art forms and creates a learning environment that allow the kids to develop their artistic capabilities. Also, it includes several performance spaces and galleries which allow the students to showcase their personal creations. With that being said, the lighting design should reflect the school’s goals and values by turning the building into a piece of art itself. In general, the overall lighting design should inspire creativity and promote productivity. Modified lighting designs were done for the following four spaces:

Recital Hall - Outdoor Terrace - Main Circulation Area - Auditorium

Electrical:

The Boston Arts Academy’s normal power distribution system is fed through a single utility company entrance. The utility feeder is connected to a switchboard which is then connected to a transformer that steps down the voltage for the building. The transformer feeds the building’s main switchboard, which is located within the main electrical room on the first floor. This switchboard distributes the normal power to distribution panels on each floor. Stepdown transformers are connected to each distribution panel to step the voltage from 480/277 V to 120/208 V. The electrical system also includes an emergency power distribution system, which will provide equipment with stand-by emergency power in the event of normal power failure. This includes a life safety system, legally required standby system, and optional standby system. The following was done for the electrical depth:

Voltage Drop Calculation - Protective Device Coordination Study - Transformer Layout Modification - Switching of Feeder Materials

Breadth Topics

Acoustical:

The first breadth topic I will be analyzing is acoustics. The Boston Arts Academy is a high school, which encompasses many forms of art, including music, dance, and theatre. Therefore, many acoustical considerations must be taken into account. I have developed designs for the auditorium for my lighting depth. Acoustic conditioning is very important within this space; therefore, I plan to study the acoustics of the auditorium in order to incorporate it with the lighting. I will study the need for different acoustical elements within the room (i.e reflectors, sound absorbers) and I will analyze the placement of these elements and how it can affect the lighting. For example, the placement of the acoustical ceiling panels will affect the fixture placement and their material will affect the reflection of light within the space

Construction Management:

A part of my electrical depth includes a modification of the building’s transformer design. The changes will include changes in transformer types, location, and size. These changes will result in the change feeder and conduit sizes as well. Therefore, for my CM breadth I have chosen to do a cost analysis and comparison between the existing transformer layout and the modified design. The cost analysis will compare the electrical project costs of transformers, feeders, and conduits between the old and new designs.
